Environmental manager Christopher Walker said the Pelican Waters 3 project involved research into which plants could survive in fresh and saltwater. Covey Associates has installed floating wetlands to help manage water quality and stormwater runoff at Tewantin and Pelican Waters. He said the systems work like hydroponics and the roots of the plants capture sediment and stormwater run-off. During research for their first saltwater system the Coast had little rainfall, so they stimulated a wet weather event by pouring 53,000 litres into the catchment in two-minute intervals. Dr Walker and other Covey Associates representatives have presented on the technology at some of the world s leading stormwater management conferences.
