the filing includes this photo, really something to behold here, a photo of secret and top secret documents including highly classified compartmented information spread out on the floor by the fbi. joining us now is cnn security correspondent josh campbell to talk about this. that photo, tell us what you see. this raises the picture worth a thousand words applies here. we heard the information from court records about what type of material this is but seeing it there laid out, that s pretty striking. as we look at this photo, you see the red there, the yellow documents, those are what are called cover sheets so you have classified information, you have to protect that information, so you have that kind of cover sheet on top, which is supposed to shield that from people who may not have a need to know. but what is interesting is if you look, it is hard to see from this photo, but we have been zooming around, you look at what is potentially behind these documents, particularly the top
a sensitive compartmented facility, you can t store classified information in a magazine closet. let s look at what we re talking about, talking about secret information and top secret information. the government definition of those two classifications is something that s secret if divulged could cause serious harm to national security. when it comes to top secret information, we re talking about information that could cause grave damage to u.s. national security if it falls into the hands of people who don t have a need to know. now, this is what is called a cover sheet, we see a lot of these in these photos. these serve two purposes, first it allows the person handling the information to know what type of documents they re dealing with here. it also helps shield that information from someone who may not have a need to know. i particularly want to center in on these classification controls. anyone with a security clearance, as you know, jim, you also get read into different compartmen
cleacorrect me if i m wrong, barbara, my understanding is a special master would necessarily be reviewing the highest of classified documents. possibly the type that would veto human intelligence gathering on the ground. is that accurate? when they review everything? i think they would review everything. it is possible that they could say, i looked these things once or property have a cover sheet on them that say, exactly what level of classification it is. it is all stable together in a document set. it could be that they simply review the classified documents there and say, this is top secret information. this is caa information. i m gonna put this in this pile here. that clearly government information. if that is with the judge agrees to do. these pieces of paper were all on stapleton scattered all around with newspaper clippings and napkins with ketchup on! them they need to review each and every document. that will be litigated, as i mentioned, by these parties. remarked the
that these documents were not being stored in a secure location. the agents ask that they be secured. video those people coming in and out of that room. how problematic is that? . that s very bad. you don t have a secured room if people are coming in and out. and that s exactly the danger you confront when you have boxes that are randomly stored. anybody can go through them and they would find national security information of the highest. these aren t hard documents to spot. they have headers and footers that say they re classified. most of them travel with a cover sheet unless it has been removed for some reason, which is not the proper thing to do. they re flagged. they re very conspicuous. so that s why it is dangerous to have them in a pad lock. not the solution. that is not a secure room.
