¥60 (¥50 for CY Students) Have you ever wondered what life in the hutongs was like? More importantly, what is the future for these enchanting alleys? Join Culture Yard and our host, Matthew Hu, for an in-depth look at the hutongs we all know and love. This talk will be in English and have a short Q&A discussion after. About the Talk Hutongs and courtyards are not just the physical built environment of Beijing, but also the soul of this thousand-year-old capital city. Throughout Beijing, we can still see a lot of remaining hutongs and beautiful old courtyards, some very well-preserved with support from government and civil society organizations, but others left in isolation and dilapidation.

In its dramatic 600-year history, the Forbidden City was palace and home to 24 emperors. Each was seen to be the Son of Heaven (天子), a perception embedded in the iconic structure’s design.
