It’s been 15 years since the Iowa Legislature passed a law protecting LGBTQ people from discrimination in housing, employment, and public spaces. It was a momentous achievement, yet the fight for equality is far from over when our neighbors in Nebraska and South Dakota, and 27 other states across the nation remain unprotected.
For the first time in history, we have a real opportunity to pass a comprehensive federal law to protect LGBTQ Americans in all 50 states. We have a president and leadership in both chambers of Congress who are enthusiastic about passing the strongest possible nondiscrimination protections.

So far, neither the Republican-controlled Iowa House nor Senate has advanced such legislation, which has appeared in at least 30 other states this year. But Iowa lawmakers are continuing to discuss the proposal.
Reynolds signaled her support Thursday evening during a Fox News town hall, where she appeared on a panel of Republican governors. She said we re working on legislation about the issue, and that she hopes to have it to her desk by the end of the annual legislative session, which is entering its final days.
