Aquinas College launches accounting and auditing program - Grand Rapids Business Journal

Grand Rapids Business Journal Courtesy Aquinas College Aquinas College is offering a new accounting and auditing certificate program in response to an increasing demand for nonaccounting professionals to partner with financial teams. The Accounting and Auditing Certificate Program will provide training for non-CPA professionals in financial accounting, accounting systems and auditing. Aquinas said IT professionals and engineers who work with accountants in corporations, government and nonprofits will benefit from the program. “This program meets a real and rapidly increasing need in the business community in greater West Michigan,” professor Brad Keuning said. “One of the key elements of the Aquinas College Accounting and Auditing Certificate Program is our ability to deliver critical skills that nonaccounting professionals can use to help their financial teams and organizations succeed.”

Grand Rapids Business Journal Courtesy Aquinas College Aquinas College plans to bring its students back on campus and resume normal in-person classes and student activities for the fall 2021 semester. “Aquinas College’s students are at the core of our mission, and our plan for fall centers around providing them with the best experience possible as safely as possible,” President Kevin G. Quinn said. “Health and safety will continue to be our priority, and we will adjust our plans as needed.” The college will open on-campus housing, in-person athletics practices and competitions with spectators and alumni activities in-person, including Homecoming. All activities will be held according to the state’s guidelines.

Students of any major can qualify for up to $2,000 for participation in the college’s Model United Nations, Model Arab League and music ensembles. “The Model United Nations and Model Arab League provide extraordinary experiences for Aquinas College students, and our music ensembles are at the creative heart of the college,” said Steve Germic, Aquinas provost. “We want to do all we can to grow these programs and make them available to students regardless of economic circumstances.”

The scholarship fund, which was named in honor of chancellor emerita Sister Mary Aquinas Weber O.P., is used to help students with financial needs. This semester, 50 students received scholarship awards to address new financial needs due to COVID-19. “Sister Aquinas is viewed by many as the embodiment of the spirit of Aquinas College. We wanted to do something to let her know how important she is,” said Lt. General John Nowak, trustee emeritus, alumnus and honorary co-chair of the Sister Mary Aquinas Weber, O.P. ’58 Endowed Scholarship Committee. “This is a fund that will stand forever. We’d love for it to become the largest endowed scholarship at Aquinas because we are talking about the largest and most iconic figure.”
