Two days before Christmas 2019, a fire reached a heritage-protected bush property in the Adelaide Hills, destroying a neighbour’s house. For the next two weeks residents were on constant alert to keep the fire in check, recalls an article in The Conversation.
Flinders University Professor Jorg Hacker, Chief Scientist at South Australia-based Airborne Research Australia (ARA), started conducting aerial research a few weeks later. He says:
I flew over fire-affected areas in the Adelaide Hills and had my first aerial view of the devastation. Fighting fires around my home, and what I saw on this flight, convinced me to get involved with helping recovery in the aftermath of the fires.
