The Karnataka government has ordered that students studying in schools managed by the minority welfare department, including the Maulana Azad Model English Medium schools in the state, should not wear Hijab in accordance with the high Court order. Advocate Vinod Kulkarni requested the high court to allow students to wear hijab to schools on Fridays and said the ban on hijab is the same as ban on Quran.
The petitioners in the Karnataka hijab case argued that the government order giving colleges the right to decide whether to allow hijabs in campuses is 'totally illegal' as college committees do not have any legal basis.
Karnataka government is likely to introduce SOP on the usage of hijab based on the high court proposal. According to sources, the new guidelines will let students coming in hijabs and burqas enter schools and then change into uniform.
