The Bombay High Court on Wednesday pulled up the Maharashtra government over its failure to ensure that the State Advisory Board constituted under the Right of Persons with Disabilities Act remained functional.
The Supreme Court has sought the responses of the CBI and the ED to a plea seeking a probe into alleged fraudulent activities linked to motivational speaker Dr Vivek Bindra and his enterprise, Bada Business Pvt. Ltd.
The Court, however, modified the sentence imposed on Figarez from rigorous imprisonment for the remainder of his life to rigorous imprisonment for 20 years without remission.
The Supreme Court had earlier told the High Court to decide on the plea expeditiously. Since the bail plea could not be taken up by the High Court despite such a direction, the top court decided on the matter itself.
"The criminal justice system of ours can itself be a punishment," said the Court while adding that it did not take more than ten minutes to find that no criminal case was made out against the accused in the 1993 case.
