Passes these laws, trying to impose what looks like quasislavery on the newly emancipated. These were governments johnson had created. Absolutely. You had incidents of africanamericans not being able to purchase land, when they would have been able to do that, because you had black soldiers who may have had a little bit of money. You had people trying to limited resources, they were not allowed to either purchase the land or rent the land. You have black people being denied the right to serve on juries. Certainly cannot vote, but the most heinous problem during this period was the apprenticeship laws. A lot of us think that black men were rounded up and jailed, if they did not have visible means of support. If they do not have employment. The real tragedy, i think, of this early period, starting right after the war into 1866 and 1867 was the apprenticeship of africanamerican children. Children being returned to former owners and forced to labor for them because the parents were deemed

Burwell. The Little Sisters of the poor and their copetitioners faced a dilemma that the religious freedom restoration act is not allowed. They can in here to their religious beliefs and pay millions of dollars in taketies, or, they can steps that they believed to be are morally and religiously objectionable, that the government believes it is necessary for them to provide contraception coverage through their Health Care Plans. Thegovernment concedes sincerity of these religious beliefs, but attempts to recast them as an objection to the very act of opting out. With all due respect, that is simply and demonstrably not true. Can you explain to me, the many of them felt that general believe they were pacifists, that if they pacifists, that would mean other people would serve for them. They were going to jail and many of them were going to jail. Jail lessng to important to some . Or less important than paying a financial penalty . The u. S. Federal reserve says it is Holding Interest rate steady with the u. S. Economy now expanding at a moderate pace. Said chairwoman janet yellen says two Interest Rate increases look likely later in the year. Anchor my name is christopher, thank you for joining us. President barack obama has nominated Merrick Garland to be the next Supreme Court justice. The vacancy on the Supreme Court follows the death of the conservative justice, Antonin Scalia, last month. But republicans controlling the senate say they will block a vote on anyone obama nominates. They want to prevent him from moving the court to the left before he leaves office. For many, it would be a crowning moment in a judicial career, standing at the president s side as a Supreme Court nominee. Less so, for Merrick Garland. His a is as good as block. President obama has laid out his case, anyway. I have selected a nominee widely recognized as one of americas sharpest legal minds, and someone who brings to his work a sp
When i come to washington i have to explain a little bit about the states. What you have read in the books and what people think about the states in washington often is not exactly true. So first of all its true all states are sulfur and yet, all states are not alike. Since we are sovereign we have our own ability to create our sovereign government in the way that we choose. Indiana is one of six states that has chosen what is a little bit more conservative path from our history and weve created the office of the attorney general as a Statutory Office. The other states are all constitutional officeholders but i serve as the indiana Indiana Attorney general under the Statutory Authority and that the distinction is one that i think merits some attention because if you are a constitutional officer you have some of the patriarchs which would allow you to do things based on the need of the population you serve. If you are a Statutory Office are coming you represent the State Government. So
