EDITOR S NOTE: The following statement was submitted to the Journal & Courier Friday in response to a recent commentary by Purdue Faculty Senates and after a trustee vote on new graduation requirements. The Purdue University Board of Trustees voted Friday (June 11) to approve a proposed civics literacy proficiency graduation requirement. The requirement is effective Fall 2021 for all incoming students on the West Lafayette campus, and Fall 2022 for incoming students at Purdue Fort Wayne, Purdue Northwest and Purdue colleges at IUPUI. Civics literacy proficiency will also be available on a voluntary basis for existing students on the West Lafayette campus.
