Virginia State Police reports that the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Richmond Field Office is investigating an officer-involved shooting in Caroline County at the request of the Caroline County Sheriff.
On Monday afternoon, Caroline County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a report of a car stopped in the road on Countyline Church Road with an unconscious male in the driver’s seat.
Police say that after the deputies arrived on scene, the driver regained consciousness. During the deputies’ interaction with the driver, police say the man was subsequently shot.
The driver was later identified by State Police as 58-year old Richard Fenton Thomas of Spotsylvania County. State Police has recovered dash cam footage that will be used in the investigation.
