Firehawk helicopters more powerful, safer than existing helicopters in fleet.
Ventura County has two new helicopters which will beef up the county’s firefighting, and search and rescue capabilities. They are former military Blackhawk helicopters which have been refurbished, and upgraded to what are called Firehawk helicopters.
Ventura County Fire Chief Mark Lorenzen says they are larger, and more powerful than the four Vietnam-era Huey helicopters the county has been using. They can carry nearly triple the amount of water as the Hueys, which the county has used for decades.

Ventura County has centralized and greatly expanded its stockpile of emergency supplies to become more self-reliant when disaster strikes.
Over the past few months, the county has stocked a Camarillo warehouse with close to $1 million in supplies enough to shelter nearly 1,000 evacuees, officials said.
The move comes more than three years after the Thomas Fire destroyed hundreds of homes in the county in what was then the largest wildfire in California history. We wanted to be far more self-sufficient, Ventura County Sheriff Bill Ayub said. He called the cache of emergency response equipment sorely needed in the county.
Ayub and other officials said the county has leaned too much on the Red Cross for support.
A new report examining law enforcement’s response to a mass shooting at the Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks reveals significant flaws in interagency communications and the tactical approach to the 2018 attack.
Ventura County Sheriff Bill Ayub commissioned the 86-page report, which also detailed a 911 system that was overloaded by reports of the shooting on Nov. 7, 2018.
For the record:
12:45 PM, Mar. 18, 2021An earlier version of this article said that an off-duty Ventura County sheriff’s deputy and two other off-duty officers who were inside the Borderline bar were armed. Only the deputy was carrying a weapon.
The report provides the most detailed account to date of the shooting, the worst in Ventura County history.
