Cases of the novel coronavirus are on the rise again in Summit County, averaging 703.6 new cases per 100,000 people in the past two weeks, up from a recent low of 513. Summit County.
A Summit County resident died from COVID-19 earlier this month, according to the Summit County Public Health Department. The death is the fourth in the county due to COVID-19.
The 47-year-old Summit County man died Dec. 7 at Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs due to respiratory failure brought on by COVID-19. The man also had other significant health conditions, according to public officials. He tested positive for COVID-19 prior to his death and was transferred from Summit County to Penrose Hospital via Flight for Life.
“It saddens us to lose anyone in our community to this disease, and we extend our deep condolences to his family,” Summit County Public Health Director Amy Wineland said in a news release.

Summit County officials shared the latest information on the county’s novel coronavirus vaccine rollout and case numbers at the virtual Board of Health meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 22.
Summit County Public Health Director Amy Wineland said the county received 900 doses in its first shipment of the Moderna vaccine on Tuesday. Wineland said the development was great, as it will enable the county to vaccinate the remainder of unvaccinated local health care workers before moving into Phase 1B, where the county will vaccinate out-patient health care providers, first responders and law enforcement members before adding more vaccination slots.

On Tuesday morning, Vail Resorts properties in Summit County, including Breckenridge Ski Resort and Keystone Resort, posted on social media that they had submitted a request to the Summit County Public Health Department to remove capacity restrictions at ski areas.
The social media posts indicated that the reduced capacities mandated by Summit County government restrict the resorts more than their state-approved winter operating plans.
