crime. we just had donald ayer. he was a former deputy attorney general under george w. bush. he said bill barr s statement on may 30th where he said i wish he had drawn a conclusion, that that in some ways gives bob mueller permission and the nakt we should expect a conclusion in him. the only words i have to go on is he said my testimony will be this report. remember, he s coming in as nobody s witness or outlier. he s coming in to defend this report. possibly 89th appearance. he knows what he s doing. democrats are hoping he will just play-by-play go through the report by detail and are betting
gingerly. stay in the four corners very carefully. track what s in the report. but then kind of cut the wake a little and see how he is. he doesn t want to be there. but he s a responsive and dutiful guy. and may give them a little. they have to be ginger about it first. so they don t get caught in the situation where they are worse off than if they never ventured outside the report. republicans plan to try poke holes in the mueller team credibility. something the president complained about since the investigation began. mueller has already said he will not go beyond what s laid out in the report. how do you see this line of questioning playing out? it s interesting. he has said that, one thing he did at the press conference was defend his team. i think even though it s not within the report, he will answer questions that are designed to attack his team. he will jump into defend them. or questions from democrats and
how would you advise them to ask effective questions? that s always a tough thing. if they want to go beyond the report they need to focus on two things. the whole issue with bill barr. was there interference and when did you decide to end the investigation and how did it come about. questions about the communication between mueller and barr. and the days after the report was handed over to barr. two issues that i hope the committees get into that are not within the four corners of the report. that i hope he answers about. the counter intelligence investigation. where they were looking into whether the president based on conduct was a russian asset. what happened to that? where is it now? is doj and fbi taking it seriously as far as you know and interference going forward in the 2020 election and beyond. what did you learn about interference to help us solve the problem in the future? do you think again the government is prepared for kp preparing for the interference going forward. h
two house committees set to hear testimony next week for former special counsel mueller. the gravity of the president s misconduct. slated to appear publicly wendy wednesday for three hours for the judiciary committee. and both parties are holding mock hearings to prepare. joining me now to discuss. jack quinn, good evening to you. jennifer, i ll start with you. i want to play schiff on what democrats expect. we ll ask him questions beyond the report and expect him to answer. so he s reporting a number of democrats are rereading the mueller report.
make crystal clear through questioning mueller that trump was found to have satisfied the elements of obstruction of justice. but that ewe uniquely they need explain why. and explain that the reason they didn t is because he s the president of the united states. and any other american would have been charged. secondly. they need to make clear that mueller found the constitution sets forth a process other than criminal justice to deal with a situation like this. and they need to bring out of him the fact that the other process is impeachment. this has to be brought down to these two points. all right. and brought home powerfully, clearly and simply. thank you all. i appreciate it. we ll be right back.
