Turkey Creek restoration project based in science despite concerns over worsening floods

Turkey Creek restoration project based in science despite concerns over worsening floods Turkey Creek restoration project based in science By John Fitzhugh | April 19, 2021 at 6:37 PM CDT - Updated April 19 at 6:43 PM GULFPORT, Miss. (WLOX) - Residents say Turkey Creek in North Gulfport hasn’t flooded as badly as it did last week in several years. The creek has been the subject of environmental dispute for years. The 12-mile creek is part of a 17,000-acre floodplain that is critical to draining rain waters from Long Beach to Bayou Bernard. There have been numerous studies and plans made but little action to prevent the creek from flooding the communities that surround it.

Renovations coming to Soria City park

Renovations being made at Soria City park Renovations coming to Soria City park By Andrés Fuentes | March 13, 2021 at 5:19 PM CST - Updated March 13 at 6:59 PM GULFPORT, Miss. (WLOX) - After decades of complaints, progress is being made in a Soria City park that residents call Bullis Avenue Park. When bulldozers, heavy equipment and construction crews started tearing up the land in late February, Nay Smith knew her prayers were answered despite some doubters. “They know Ms. Nay and know that I’m right about everything,” said Smith. Construction is now being done on the city-owned land that offered little, but a plot of asphalt and rusty basketball goals to generations of children in the neighborhood.
