Duluth officially proclaimed a climate emergency Monday night, by an 8-0 vote of its City Council, with at large councilor Derek Medved absent.
Several citizens addressed the council using an online platform, as the body continues to meet virtually, in an attempt to avoid the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
Lisa Fitzpatrick helped collect more than 700 signatures on a petition calling on the council to take action and said: “We can and must reduce the emission of greenhouse gases to zero as soon as possible. We are in a race to stop the climate crisis. It’s the race of a lifetime. It’s a race for the future.”

DULUTH, MN (CBS-3) – After seven months, a task force is sharing what they believe it will take to reach a strong financial future for Duluth’s Spirit Mountain.
That presentation was given to the Duluth City Council at their Monday night meeting.
The Task Force was created in June 2020, as the ski hill and recreation area was already financially struggling and COVID-19 was only making matters worse.
Along with suggesting different business and leadership models, the group said it will take a significant capital investment to boost revenue.
They suggested updating old chair lifts, the Skyline Chalet building, and skiing and mountain biking trails.

By a unanimous vote Monday night, 4th District City Councilor Renee Van Nett was appointed council president, succeeding 1st District Councilor Gary Anderson in the role.
Meanwhile, at large Councilor Arik Forsman was elected vice president also by a 9-0 vote, replacing Van Nett in that position.
In nominating Van Nett for president, 3rd District Councilor Roz Randorf noted that 52 male councilors and 13 female councilors have held the leadership post, but Van Nett is the first person of color to be elected council president. Van Nett is of Indigenous descent.

A couple s plans to open a brewpub in Duluth s Lakeside neighborhood received a boost Monday when the Duluth City Council unanimously voted in support of an ordinance change. Where restaurants with beer or liquor licenses previously were not allowed within 400 feet of a church or school, that minimum setback will now be reduced to 300 feet.
