UpdatedThu, Feb 18, 2021 at 5:29 pm PT Reply The three-month test program will start on April 1 (Shutterstock) HOLLYWOOD, CA A bustling stretch of Robertson Boulevard will become a pedestrian only zone on weekends, as part of a pilot program aiming to reimagine city space and create more room for outdoor activities. The street will be closed to cars from Santa Monica Boulevard to El Tovar Place between 6 p.m. Saturday and 2 a.m. Monday. Adjacent to West Hollywood Park and just north of Melrose Avenue, the section of Robertson Boulevard includes popular bars and restaurants such as The Abbey, which has been in business since 1991. Due to narrow sidewalks and foot congestion, people often venture into the street during night hours, which can create a traffic hazard.

West Hollywood Will Ban Cars On A Busy Stretch Of Robertson On Weekend Nights

. West Hollywood is the latest local city to rethink public space by closing a street to cars in order to create more space for walking and biking (and likely outdoor dining). The City Council voted unanimously to launch a limited pilot program on Robertson Boulevard, creating a car-free zone from Santa Monica Boulevard to El Tovar Place, just north of Melrose Avenue. The street will transition to a pedestrian-only space on weekends, from 6 p.m. Saturday to 2 a.m. Mondays. The pilot is slated to launch in mid-April and will then be studied for three months. Based on the findings, West Hollywood city leaders will then decide to continue the program and potentially expand the vehicle ban to include Friday night.
