Michigan Supreme Court won t allow draft charter of Detroit August ballot

View Comments For the second time this week, the Michigan Supreme Court has halted a court ruling to remove a ballot question on the proposed charter from Detroit s August primary ballot. Friday s order comes as the high court considers the latest appeal in the legal fight over the charter.  Earlier today, community leaders in Detroit urged the Michigan Supreme Court to keep the proposed charter on the ballot.  The Friday order by the state Supreme Court suspends a Wayne County Circuit Court ruling that ordered the removal of the ballot question off the primary ballot and a Michigan Court of Appeals ruling Thursday that affirmed the circuit court’s decision.

Deadline Detroit | Detroit Council approves $200,000 for Black Lives Matter legal battle

by  Violet Ikonomova A Detroit Will Breathe protest in the summer of 2020. (file photo) Detroit City Council on Tuesday approved $200,000 in spending on a lawsuit seeking damages from largely peaceful racial-justice demonstrators who the city claims were part of a civil conspiracy. The contract with the Clark Hill law firm will go toward defending the city against an excessive-force suit filed by Detroit Will Breathe and supporting its counterclaim against the activist group. The spending was approved in a contentious 5-4 vote, with councilmembers opposed arguing it could have a chilling effect on dissent and that a countersuit is not needed to prove whether demonstrators acted inappropriately.
