killed himself and a campus officer on campus. students gathered last night to remember the officer at a vigil. we visited the county where the gunman is fun. reporter: not far from a high school, the large home where ross ashley once lived with his parents. this neighbor said the family seemed to keep to themselves and they described ashley as standoffish. they stay off to themselves. like i said, we live on this road, the people on that end are a little outgoing and visiting and stuff like that. it s sad. reporter: but during high school ross ashley made a name for himself on the football field as this newspaper account shows and he won scholarships for his academics to a half dozen colleges. most recently he was a part time student at radford university. investigators say it was in radford a day before the virginia tech shooting that actually committed his first crime. armed with a handgun he entered a radford real estate office and demanded a key to a vehicle. the
