Women, People of Color Usher New Political Era in San Diego
By Marielena Castellanos
It’s a new day for women and people of color in San Diego politics, as newcomers step into elected positions throughout the County.
Jill Galvez, who has lived in Northwest Chula Vista for more than 26 years was recently elected to the Chula Vista City Council to represent Council District 2, which has some of the City’s oldest neighborhoods including the historic downtown Chula Vista and the Bayfront.
Galvez commented on why she decided to run for office, “Chula Vista is the best place on earth to live, raise a family and retire. I am determined to work hard for our community to make good things happen and make our neighborhoods proud.”

“Campbell elected new S.D. council president” (Dec. 11): Councilmember Jen Campbell would have us believe that her proposed short-term rental regulations includes sufficient enforcement budget and capacity to make all San Diego neighborhoods impacted by short-term rentals livable.
And yet, here we are in the worst time for the spread of the coronavirus and she stands by and does nothing when her constituents plea for her to enforce the public health guidelines and shutdown short-term rentals in Mission Beach.
Where do you think these short-term rental visitors come from? This is just another example of Councilmember Campbell accommodating special interests. And, I fear, it is only the beginning. While a recall of a councilmember sounds harsh, perhaps this is the only way for the residents of this city to regain some degree of control of our environment.
SAN DIEGO
Dr. Jennifer Campbell was elected San Diego’s new City Council president Thursday night, Dec. 10, in a narrow 5-4 vote after nearly seven hours of public testimony.
The vast majority of the roughly 300 residents who spoke at the meeting lobbied council members to choose Councilwoman Monica Montgomery Steppe as council president instead of Campbell.
They said Montgomery Steppe, who is Black, would be a better leader and a more effective advocate for racial justice and social equity than Campbell, who is White. Both women are Democrats.
Council members voting for Campbell were Chris Cate, Stephen Whitburn, Marni von Wilpert and Raul Campillo. Council members voting for Montgomery Steppe were Vivian Moreno, Joe LaCava and Sean Elo-Rivera. Both Campbell and Montgomery Steppe voted for themselves.
