Laredo City Council meets Monday to discuss several potential plans of action in the city’s fight against the pandemic. At an emergency meeting last week, several local doctors spoke about the appropriate measures council should take. Some advocated for strategic closures, some for a citywide shutdown akin to what council enacted last March.
Although this would supersede Gov. Greg Abbott’s emergency order, Councilmember Rudy Gonzalez placed an item on the agenda to discuss a possible citywide closure. If council chooses this route, they would invite a lawsuit from the Texas attorney general.

Usually held in an auditorium before a crowd, this year’s address was conducted as most events now are virtually. The mayor delivered a prerecorded speech, was filmed riding the bus to visit several council members in their respective districts and then was interviewed live by Jerry Garza, KGNS news director.

During a special call meeting on Tuesday, Laredo City Council voted to approve a feasibility study into combining the city and county tax offices.
In November, Laredo voters overwhelmingly approved eight proposed amendments to the City Charter, effectively instituting a filing fee for future candidates, regulating the timing of the mayor’s veto and raising the minimum qualifications for a city manager, among other changes.
