Jackson residents and city councilmembers have differing opinions about whether National Guard troops should be activated to stem record violence in the city, but agree more must be done solve the issue.
Councilman Aaron Banks said he favors additional presence from federal agencies, such as the FBI, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and Drug Enforcement Agency, but opposes federal troops on the streets of Jackson. Do we need federal help? Yes. But I do not want to see tanks and other federalized units going up and down the streets of Jackson, Banks said. We need a presence. I don t think it is an armed occupation. If there are other things we can ask for at the federal level, I m willing to hear those options.
