National City is the latest San Diego County community to adopt a cannabis ordinance, but it is the first to allow consumption lounges, following a City Council vote Tuesday.
In a 4-1 vote, with Councilman Ron Morrison opposed, the ordinance lays out the framework for allowing retail sales, cultivation, distribution, manufacturing and transportation of cannabis and cannabis products in industrial zones and tourist commercial areas west of Interstate 5. It is expected to take effect in 30 days.
The council’s decision came over the objections of the National City Planning Commission and several members of the public, who cited data on the consequences of marijuana use and said allowing businesses, like consumption lounges, is not consistent with the city’s family values.
