Fermanagh and Omagh council votes in favour of Finucane inquiry

Members of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council have voted in support of a Sinn Fein motion calling for a public inquiry into the murder of Pat Finucane. Proposed by Councillor Sheamus Greene and seconded by Councillor Glen Campbell, the motion split the chamber but passed comfortably. An Ulster Unionist amendment was rejected after Chair Councillor Diana Armstrong ruled it inadmissible. The motion condemned the Secretary of State for failing to order a full inquiry into the assassination of Pat Finucane, and: “The cover up that followed.” Councillor Greene told members: “Pat Finucane was one of the most high-profile human rights lawyers in Ireland. His killing was national and international news, as is the pursuit for the truth about who killed him and why. The Finucane family have inspired many to seek justice. Diana Armstrong, UUP THE Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council has ruled that remarks made at a previous meeting around the handling of a Sinn Fein motion were disrespectful. There was fury in the chamber during the December meeting when then Chair, Councillor Chris Smyth, was accused of censorship by Sinn Fein after he rejected a motion on the 100th anniversary of the passing of the Government of Ireland Act, resulting in the partition of the island of Ireland. The submitted motion held this had proved detrimental to the social, economic and political development of the island, and that, 100 years on, partition continues to fail all citizens.

THE now former Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Chris Smyth, commissioned a piece of artwork which captures images of the district during Lockdown for the Council s Civic Art collection. The collection – which largely comprises works by local artists – was started by the first Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Thomas O’Reilly, and has been added to by each Chair in succeeding years.
