Overwhelmed Steve receives prestigious Borough award Date published: 05 May 2021 Steve Hill receives his Civic Appreciation award from the Mayor of Oldham, Councillor Ginny Alexander Saturday (May 1) proved to be another red letter day for intrepid schoolteacher, explorer and super fund-raiser Steve Hill. Steve, who has been the Deputy Headteacher at the St Joseph’s primary school in Shaw for 17 years and runs his own ‘Team Hill Charitable Trust’, received a hugely prestigious Civic Appreciation Award from the town of Oldham, presented by Mayor Councillor Ginny Alexander. The award is in recognition of his significant contribution, dedication and charitable work for the local community and Borough of Oldham.

It s a golden celebration for former Chronicle lovebirds Heather and Barry Date published: 26 April 2021 Heather and Barry Dunkerley with their flowers and card from the Mayor of Oldham, Councillor Ginny Alexander The Mayor of Oldham, Councillor Ginny Alexander, has sent her best wishes and congratulations to an Oldham couple who met at the Chronicle and have just marked their 50th wedding anniversary. Heather and Barry Dunkerley met at the Oldham Chronicle in 1968 when Heather was 17 and Barry was 19. Barry worked there for 37 years until he had to retire due to his health. Heather worked there until 1973 when she had her first child, before returing in 1989, and then worked there until 2009 until she opted for voluntary redundancy.

The Mayor of Oldham, Councillor Ginny Alexander The Mayor of Oldham, Cllr Ginny Alexander, made special reference to townsfolk who have faced tragedy in her Christmas message. “This year has been a very traumatic time for many of us here in Oldham, and my heart goes out to all those who have lost loved ones,” she said. ‘I would like to mention our elderly people, who are in care homes that have been isolated, and who are unable to have visits from their loved ones since March. The Mayor of Oldham, Councillor Ginny Alexander The Mayor of Oldham’s final donation of the year - £300 - has gone to a fab organisation PHAB  a self-funding not-for-profit community charity group run by volunteers. Formed in 2000, the organisation was opened and run by the present chair Jack Edwards who started the group because of his daughter Donna has a severe disability and there was nowhere for her to go. The group’s motto is: “Making More Of A Life Together” and enables young adults with physical and learning disabilities and difficulties and able bodied to enjoy social interaction in a safe community environment.
