Chimps, meerkats and macaws are gifted Christmas presents early

Christmas has come early at a Queensland Zoo with staff gifting the animals with festive presents and bon bons. Delicious treats were wrapped up and given to the chimpanzees, meerkats and macaws at Rockhampton Zoo on Wednesday.   Parks Councillor Cherie Rutherford said the gifts were part of the animal enrichment activities. Dog owners encouraged to have their say on off-leash areas

Council provides a number of off-leash areas where dogs can exercise freely, play with their owners and socialise with other dogs. To ensure the needs of the community and their fur-friends are being met, residents are invited to undertake a survey to share their views on dog off-leash areas in the region. Parks Councillor Cherie Rutherford said feedback gained from the survey would be used in future planning for off-leash areas. “Council recognises there is an appetite among the community for more places that allow for free run in a more natural environment,” she said.

Rockhampton Regional Council Division 1 councillor Shane Latcham made the announcement on Friday morning, as his three young children, wife, parents and in-laws stood beside him in support. Cr Latcham said he gave the nomination a lot of thought and asked community members for their thoughts and received an overwhelming response of people encouraging him to go for it. Voted in for the first time at the March election this year, Cr Latcham believes this will play to his advantage.
