SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Mayor Todd Gloria and Council President Pro Tem Stephen Whitburn were on hand Wednesday to kick off a major project to improve Children s Park in downtown San Diego s Marina neighborhood. A city can t truly be great without vibrant public spaces, Gloria said. With the redevelopment of Children s Park, we re transforming this space into a place where residents and visitors can gather, relax, picnic, play, exercise and enjoy a beautiful part of our downtown area. This is how we create a city that works for all of us.

During a news conference at Urban MO’s Bar & Grill in Hillcrest, San Diego Police Department Chief David Nisleit, Mayor Todd Gloria and members of the City Council were joined by LGBTQ business and community leaders to outline the SDPD’s Safe Place Program.
“The San Diego Police Department wants every resident to feel safe when reporting a hate crime that has already occurred or helping us stop crime before it happens by reporting suspicious activity,” Nisleit said.

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – In a unanimous vote, San Diego City Council greenlit the Special Issues Council Committee on COVID-19 Response and Recovery.
The committee plans to: Focus and streamline the City’s short-term and long-term response and recovery plans; monitor and evaluate the impact and effectiveness of regulations enacted already; provide a forum for the council to receive input from the community on our response; provide oversight and make recommendations on the distribution of state and federal COVID-19 relief funding and programs so the council directs emergency aid to struggling small businesses, not just big corporations; and, address equity and disparities in our communities that have been exacerbated by the pandemic.
SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – Council President Pro Tem Stephen Whitburn, committee chair, presented the 2021 Work Plan for the Land Use & Housing Committee. The homelessness crisis is front and center in the plan, and the Committee will seek solutions focused on housing and behavioral health care.
In his comments to the committee today while unveiling the plan, Whitburn said he is confident San Diego will end the widespread homelessness that exists today.
“We are in a unique position to move this city forward,” Whitburn said. “For the first time in years, we have a council and a mayor with shared goals and a determination to work together to achieve those goals.”
