After decades burning much of Connecticut’s garbage, Hartford officials hope to see a roughly 80-acre property around a recently closed trash-to-energy plant in South Meadows used for economic redevelopment.
Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin is asking the City Council to approve a $480,000 purchase of Sacred Heart Church at 24 Ely St. in Hartford for a broader redevelopment project.
In his letter to Council President Maly D. Rosado, Bronin said he has already signed a letter of intent to buy the parcel from the Archdiocese of Hartford.
Bronin’s letter doesn’t describe a specific plan for the property, but describes the purchase as “a unique opportunity to pursue a creative adaptive reuse that will enhance the overall vision of the community and neighborhood…”
Council President Maly D. Rosado said the move is “part of our ongoing efforts to make City government more accessible and convenient for members of the public through the COVID-19 pandemic and well into the future.”
The Hartford Treasurer’s office is moving to divest the city’s billion-dollar pension fund from Russian-owned assets, while the city council is set to consider a resolution supporting the measure and calling on Hartford to impose further sanctions.
