Council approves Silver Spring Business Improvement District Structure gives marketing, promotion control to private sector July 27, 2021 Montgomery County Government Businesses in downtown Silver Spring will have greater control over marketing and promotions, under a plan the Montgomery County Council approved Tuesday. The Silver Spring Business Improvement District, or BID, aims to improve the business climate and marketing of the downtown area by replacing some of the marketing and promotion responsibilities of the Silver Spring Urban District. BIDs are seen throughout the Washington, D.C., region, including 11 in the nation’s capital. County Council President Tom Hucker and Council Member Hans Riemer proposed the Silver Spring BID. Riemer said he’s heard from several businesses in downtown Silver Spring who want more control over marketing the area.

Council amends Riemer s 5G zoning amendment, final vote next week

share this County Council members on Tuesday made more changes to a proposal that would help pave the way for 5G service to expand in Montgomery County. The zoning text amendment sets limits on where and how 5G small cell antennas and equipment can be placed in residential areas countywide. The smaller equipment used for 5G networks can be placed closer together. That creates a more robust, faster network, versus 4G towers, which often stretch hundreds of feet into the air and are more spaced out. The small cell antennas for 5G can also be placed on existing utility poles or similar structures. Overall, 5G provides greater speeds and data transfer than 4G technology.

Alcohol in County Parks No Longer Permitted as of July 1 Anyone who has enjoyed a glass of wine, beer or a cocktail at local parks during the pandemic will have to find something else to wash down their meal. As of July 1, Montgomery Parks will no longer allow alcohol consumption without a permit in the 13 parks that have been participating in the Picnic in the Park program. The program’s demise was made in response to Maryland ending its COVID-19 State of Emergency as of July 1. During the pandemic, alcohol delivery and take-out from food and beverage establishments to outdoor parks was permitted.
