NEW homes being considered for Highworth would focus on carbon-neutral schemes and affordable housing. Swindon Borough Council s Housing Development Company is looking to build 26 homes on Lechlade Road, half of which would be designated as affordable- and nine of those homes would have eco-friendly measures installed to cut carbon emissions. Unlike some of the other areas where housing has been proposed, the land is allocated for development in Highworth s neighbourhood plan. Staff from the developer, which is separate from the borough council itself and seeks to develop land owned by the local authority, spoke to Highworth councillors about the scheme before any formal planning application had been submitted.
A NEW safety crossing could be added to a busy road where a woman suffered potentially life-changing injuries after being hit by a car. Highworth Town Council unanimously agreed to ask the borough to immediately consider setting up a way for people to cross a difficult section of St Michael’s Avenue without worrying about cars speeding round the corner. The 30mph horseshoe-shaped road provides access to several streets and residential estates in the town and is regularly used and crossed by children and families going to school or elderly neighbours popping to the shops, GP surgery or bus stations.
