Air pollution in Swindon close to breaking WHO safe limit

Swindon Borough Council has declared Kingshill Road an Air Quality Management Area People living in Swindon are suffering levels of air pollution close to breaking a safe limit recommended by the World Health Organisation. Figures from the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs show the average concentration of PM2.5 pollution particles in the borough was 9.2 micrograms per cubic metre in 2019 – below the UK limit of 25, but close to the WHO guideline limit of 10. That was a decrease from 10.3 micrograms in 2018. PM2.5 pollution consists of fine particles in the air, which can sometimes be visible as haze when the air is still. Log burners, open fires and solid fuel are increasingly of concern as producers of this type of pollution.
