attacker. cnn s ian lee is live in istanbul. ian, we now have a claim of responsibility. reporter: that is right. we thought it was isis before they claimed responsibility mainly because it bears the hallmarks of the isis attack. on twitter, isis saying they were the ones behind it. one of their soldiers carried it out targeting the nightclub. targeting a christian celebration of new years. it is important to note many of the victims of the attack were muslims celebrating the new year. isis saying this is retribution for turkey involvement in syria. they are battling in the city of al baab. turkish forces hope to take that city soon. turkey and isis have been battling it out. isis hand been cas been carryin attacks.
