The Table Urban Farm has a simple mission: to create community through growing and donating food. And the nonprofit organization has recently built a home to further carry out that mission. The Table Public House, at 2190 South Platte River Drive, is a family-oriented cafe and taproom that just opened the first week of April.
The Table Urban Farm was founded by husband-and-wife team Craig Broek and Jeanine Kopaska Broek in 2012. The organization grows produce on donated plots of land in the Platt Park and University Hills neighborhoods to distribute for free to neighbors in hopes of addressing food insecurity while also fostering connections between neighborhood residents. The Table Public House is an outgrowth of that dream and the first time there will be actual tables to match the organization s name.
As you probably remember, March 17 St. Patrick s Day was closing time in 2020, the day that bars, breweries and restaurants across Colorado were forced to curtail in-house service as a way to try to slow the spread of COVID-19. Through fires both literal and figurative in the incredibly hard year now drawing to a close, coffee businesses throughout the western United States showed a remarkable ability to keep on keepin’ on.
When the COVID-19 pandemic caused shortages of common grocery items, coffee companies were quick to jump into the provisions business, selling staples like flour, grains and produce alongside coffee and prepared foods. In California, the first state to announce statewide stay-at-home orders, Go Get Em Tiger and Sightglass Coffee were two relatively high-profile examples of this.
Given the favorable weather in coastal and southwestern regions or the outdoorsy spirit of the Rockies, new and existing coffee shops were also able to lean more heavily upon outdoor seating and curbside service as social-distancing and airflow became sought-after amenities.
