Corvallis-Benton board finalizes homeless recommendations

A Corvallis-Benton County advisory board has forwarded 12 recommendations on homelessness to elected officials. The Corvallis City Council and the Benton County Board of Commissioners are scheduled to review the report of the Home, Opportunity, Planning and Equity Advisory Board, known as HOPE for short, at a joint meeting May 20. The votes at a virtual meeting Wednesday to approve the recommendations culminated a 16-month process of data gathering and public engagement aimed at producing better coordination of services for the homeless. “Let’s take a breath,” said Julie Arena, the program coordinator for Benton County. “You all have done an excellent job of navigating one of the most difficult problems in our community.”

Funding to the rescue: Homeless service providers to share $2 6M

The emergency services grant money will go to the Unity Shelter group, Corvallis Housing First and the Corvallis Daytime Drop-in Center, although it’s not clear how much which agency will receive. In an effort to fight hesitancy and misinformation about the COVID-19 vaccine, Hollywood producers, writers and showrunners are including vaccine storylines in scripts. Corvallis adds homeless funds, loses camp plan

The Corvallis City Council has agreed to appropriate more than $360,000 in federal funds for services that will largely help the homeless. That’s the good news on the city’s fight against homelessness. The bad news is that Corvallis Mayor Biff Traber announced at Monday’s remote meeting that plans by the Unity Shelter group to put together a managed camping facility near the BMX park have collapsed. Unity Shelter, which manages the men’s shelter and hygiene center, the women’s shelter and the micro shelters at the First United Congregational Church of Christ, had hoped to open a managed camping facility with new tents on platforms, case management and a warming hut.
