Gov t bolstering capacity to tackle illicit gun trade

The Government is bolstering its capacity to intercept the trafficking of guns and ammunition into the country as well as implementing a more robust legislative framework to punish those who engage in the illicit trade. Addressing the ‘Let’s Connect with Ambassador Marks’ virtual discussion session on April 8, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Security,  Dr Horace Chang, said that strengthening the legislative framework is critical in addressing the issue of crime in the country. Eighty per cent of homicides are committed with firearms. “We are in the process of having a new Firearms Act, which will increase the penalty for not only illegal possession and use of firearms [but] also trading and manufacturing. We are looking at a number of other pieces of legislation, so we can have a more robust legislative framework in dealing with crime,” Dr. Chang said.

Gov t advancing four key bills to fight crime monster - GG

Governor General Sir Patrick Allen delivering the Throne Speech in Parliament on Thursday. The Government is advancing the development of what it said are four “complex priority pieces of legislation” which are currently at the draft Bill stage as part of efforts to tame the crime monster. The four pieces of legislation are: - An Act to Repeal and Replace the Firearms Act; - The Criminal Administration (Suppression of Criminal Organisations) (Amendment) Act; - The Immigration Restrictions (Commonwealth Citizens) (Amendment) Act; and - The Aliens (Amendment) Act. Governor-General Sir Patrick Allen made the announcement Thursday as he outlined the Administration’s plans for the 2021/22 legislative year during his delivery of the Throne Speech at the ceremonial opening of the Parliament.
