electricity as winter actually closes in. cnn law enforcement correspondent whitney wild has our report. reporter: moore county, north carolina, will again plunge into darkness tonight, two days after the sheriff says someone opened fire on two power substations a few miles apart in carthage and west end, north carolina. our medical calls have increased due to people being on oxygen, and other medical devices that require power. we ve had an increase in fire alarms. we ve had an increase in traffic accidents. reporter: police are working to find a person or people responsible for what they say was an intentional criminal act. so far they are releasing little information, saying only the attack happened saturday night at a gate at one of the substations as we moved from its hinges. power went down around 7:00 p.m., the same time a drag show was set to take place in the area. social media buzzed that it was an effort to stop the drag show but police say so far they have
major city chiefs, you remember him, women, when he was the chief of fairfax police department during the washington sniper case and the daily calming presence there. he s been basically doing triage since january 6th, which are what are the things that have to be done right now, and what is the strategic plan for the toucher, and how are we going to present that. if you just broke it down to, i m going to give every member of congress a security detail, by my math, that would be about 3600 additional people added to a police department of 2,000. so this is something where they really have to take a measured approach. they certainly do. whitney, more broadly, what sort of message will this prosecution send based on everything you re hearing? at least the hope is this sends a very strong message. when you look at the charges and maximum sentences, he could face up to life in prison. what sources have indicated to me is that more broadly, the srt of the run of the mill threat
story. new fallout from the paul pelosi attack. u.s. capitol police now facing intense scrutiny from a top u.s. house committee chairwoman. cnn law enforcement correspondent whitney wild is working the story for us. so what does congresswoman lofgren demanding from u.s. capitol police? reporter: in a word, capitol police told congress in december 2020, they were concerned about heightened threats, including to house speaker nancy pelosi, and they told congress she gets the most threats of any member of congress. and yet this brutal attack still happened. they want to know why and what the department is doing to stop it. the letter says this, the incident and related circumstances, including the manner in which the speaker and her family were targeted raise significant questions about security protections for members of congress, marly those in the presidential line of succession. further, the letter asks about the relationship between capitol
to do violence against her, as well as others who are in political leadership in this state and in this country. so we do emphasize that this was politically motivated. do you have any information that you can share on the suspect s criminal history? no, not at this time. and quite frankly, it s nothing that would have led anybody to believe that he was capable of what he ultimately did last friday. so it s nothing that would give any indication that he s capable of this level of violence. but certainly now we see the way that this played out, that he s an extremely dangerous individual. the district attorney of san francisco, brook jenkins, thank you for joining us. we appreciate it very, very much. thank you. let s get more on the developing story. joining us now is cnn s chief law enforcement and intelligence analysis john miller, whitney wild is back with us, as well. john, let me get your reaction from what you just heard from
