republican filibuster in the senate. so far illinois congressman adam kingzinger is the only republican to confirm that he ll support this bill which is notable because unlike the first proposal this committee would put the democratic speaker of the house, nancy pelosi, firmly in charge of the process. joining us now is nbc capitol hill correspondent garrett hake. two big questions. do we know if there s any other republicans that will vote in support of this and do we know which republican the house speaker might appoint to the committee? the answer to both is we don t know yet. in terms of other republicans who might vote in favor, there s 35 house republicans who voted in favor of the bipartisan commission who have taken their names out of the running for this. some of these republicans said they supported a commission pause they wanted the process to look into what happened on january 6th to be bipartisan, and they don t think this will do it. now, as for who the speaker
notified the house judiciary committee that acting attorney general matt whitaker will not, i repeat, will not appear before tomorrow s scheduled hearing if the house issues a subpoena to him. joining me now, msnbc correspondent garrett hake live on the hill. what does this all mean? reporter: stephanie, if everything stays as it is right now, ting means we should still expect to see whitaker on the hill tomorrow. here s how we got here. house democrats were very concerned that whitaker would choose not to show up here unless they subpoena him or if he came and declined to answer questions, they d be stuck in a position where they couldn t get the information they want. so house democrats voted to authorize a subpoena, to make sure whitaker shows up. they haven t given it to him yet. they haven t presented it to him yet. now you have the doj saying if you do subpoena him, he won t come. so if house democrats sit on this authorization, we may still see matt whitaker here. where we ll

shooting in alexandria, virginia, that critically injured steve scalise and others. last night the president and first lady visited scalise, one of the capitol officers injured in that shooting. president trump tweeted just left hospital. steve scalise one of the truly great heroes. pray for scalise. scalise was standing at second base when the shooting began. after being shot, he dragged himself to outfield as the gunfire continued for ten minutes. according to the hospital, scalise sustained a single rifle shot to his left hip. doctors say he remains in critical condition and will need further surgery. joining us, msnbc correspondent garrett hake, live from alexandria, virginia, where the shooting happened. take us into the late es on the shooting and what direction it s going to. reporter: last night the fbi put out a call for any information. they say no tip is too small. they need to know a lot more about this 66-year-old shooter here, james hodgkinson, who
