welcome back to velshi & ruhle. we have all seen these pictures. toddlers in diapers running for their lives. some of them barefoot choking on teargas. teargas that was shot by americans. and the question is why. yes, there were adults in the crowd. yes, we re going to talk about those adults. but we have to start by saying nothing is okay about that image and teargas into a crowd with children and find out why this is happening. we ll talk more about teargas and how it s different when you shoot it into a crowd, particularly when children joining us now correspondent gadi schwartz and emma murphy who s there when cbp fired teargas at the migrants. both are live in tijuana across the border. emma, walk us through this. why did these people rush the
houses, so tonight, unfortunately, the power has been cut or has been lost here on radio island where we are. it looks like across the bay we don t see any lights over at beaufort either, so we re not sure what the power situation is over there. but you can see the situation is getting even more critical out here. these winds are not going to allow first responders to go out and save anybody. so at this point it is all about hunkering down wherever you can find safety, and this is what we re going to see sweep through the north and south carolina in the next few hours. so that was radio island, north carolina, correspondent gadi schwartz. conditions have improved there since. that was really the calling card of the storm initially. it was after dark, and then before they were forced inside, they were forced inside because of the threat of the storm spawning a tornado in that area. we re going to take a break. when we come back, we ll go to
from earlier tonight. our own correspondent gadi schwartz was out in some of those high winds and heavy rain action on radio island, north carolina. reporter: it is treacherous out here. as bad as it looks right here, we have actually moved locations. i am using a building as a wind block. right over there where you see the light hitting, it is extremely windy there. we are talking about wind gusts well above what we were seeing earlier, which is about 60, 70 miles per hour. this is an area that s starting to see the tide rise again. we will get high tide at 11:00. when that tide rises, we are also expecting to see a tremendous storm surge that could be catastrophic to some of these areas. beaufort is just across the bay there and they ve already started to see flooding in some of their streets. we know the storm surge has come up and surrounded some houses and actually worked its way through the stilts and is encroaching on some of the
but these winds continue to pickup. we ve been expecting to see the storm surge. occasionally we ll come outside and check to see if the storm surge has risen, but we haven t seen it. we were expecting it 11:00, 11:30 tonight. but so far that storm surge is still around the same level. so we re not sure when that storm surge is going to happen that was very interesting to hear bill talking about that a little bit ago. but if this continues, we re talking about 24 to 48 hours of us under this constant barrage of wind, constant barrage of rain, and right now it s so dark outside we don t know what it looks like. but we do understand that there are other areas in this vicinity that have been flooded. brian? all right, gadi schwartz, i m liking that stairwell. it s good for you and your crew for a safe alternative as long as you can. thank you for that. bill, you lived and worked down here. i heard you say your old tv station
water back up in the rivers and creeks. but i do live right on the coast, so if it does push the water ahead of it tomorrow when it goes to the south, we ll be seeing the storm surge here in moore head city. mayor, about the you mentioned there s people on some roofs in some small communities. is that on the pimlico sound on the sound side flooding? that would be more towards it would be towards the pimlico sound, that is correct. but there s a lot of creeks up that way and i m sure it s the creeks that are backing up. actually excuse me, they would know. they would be on the noose river. i m sorry, noose river. mayor, all we can do is wish you strength and the best of luck along with the folks in your community. thank you very much for offering us time to talk to us tonight. mayor jerry jones. nbc news correspondent gadi schwartz is in beaufort, north
