Today is day 93 of the 105-day legislative session. For such an abnormal period of time, with most of the session activities conducted virtually, this has been a somewhat ambitious session for Democratic majorities. Recent long sessions have seen some significant progressive legislating, like the public option bill and the long term care trust from 2019. This is a shift from a previously divided legislature and even the recession-hardened legislatures of most of the Gregoire years. Prior to that, the Locke years were largely centrist, too.

The following editorial originally appeared in The Seattle Times:
Recently, the state Office of Corrections Ombuds released a report that highlights the prison system’s latest reprehensible indifference toward the health of people in state custody. This time, delayed cancer treatments led to serious and deadly consequences.

My Gonzaga Bulldogs went down in a stunningly flat performance last night to Baylor in the NCAA Men’s College Basketball National Championship. It was a brutal way to end a season for a team that was considered, up until 24 hours ago, perhaps the greatest college basketball team ever.
After 22 years of continuous post-season play, we have just two national championship appearances and no titles. It’s frustrating. But, then I look at the Mariner’s and I remember what real frustration feels like… Thanks for the season, Zags. Let’s play ball, M’s!

A report released by the Office of the Corrections Ombuds (OCO) found that delays in cancer diagnosis and treatment in Washington State Department of Corrections (DOC) facilities led to death for at least one patient, and terminal diagnoses for several others.
This report comes after previous investigations performed by the OCO. In one such report, the OCO concluded that multiple failures by staff at Monroe Correctional Complex led to the cancer deaths of two inmates. The new report is broader and examines delays that happen at facilities across the state.
