NEW DELHI: The coronavirus cases are once again rising in the country, especially in Maharashtra where recently presence of a new strain of the virus was reported.
Though the rate of growth is not as steep as it was during the peak of pandemic, nevertheless the cases have been steadily rising since the last seven days.
From February 7-14, the country reported 77,284 cases. In the following week (February 15-21), more than 1 lakh cases were recorded 31% higher than the preceding week.
The spike was led by Maharashtra, which saw an 81% week-on-week rise in recorded infections.
The state contributed over 41% of the total cases reported in the country in the third week of this month. In the previous two weeks, the cases from Maharashtra constituted nearly a quarter of the total cases in the country.

Amid rising coronavirus COVID-19 cases in Maharashtra s Pune, the government has decided to shut all schools, colleges till February 28. The government has also banned the public movement between 11 PM and 6 AM.
It is learnt that Maharashtra government is planning to impose a night curfew in Yavatmal, Amravati and Nagpur districts to curb the spread of the deadly viral disease.

NEW DELHI: The number of coronavirus cases in India is once again surging, particularly in four states of Punjab, Maharashtra, Kerala and Madhya Pradesh.
The rise in the number of cases was reported amidst the discovery of several new variants of the novel coronavirus in Maharashtra that are believed to be more transmissible than the prevailing variants.
In Maharashtra s Vidharbha region and Mumbai, the discovery of new variants has prompted the local authorities to impose a fresh lockdown and issue new guidelines for the general public, respectively.
Cases rising since five consecutive days
The number of daily cases in the country had been consistently falling since the last few months. On Friday, 13,993 cases were reported in the country. This was the highest figure reported since January 25 barring the exception of January 29 when 18,885 cases were reported.
Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) mayor Kishori Pednekar on Tuesday said that a lockdown may have to be imposed in Mumbai in view of the rise in Covid-19 cases "if people don't follow rules", news agency ANI reported.
