LANCASTER A longtime local recreational angler says perch are no longer plentiful in these parts, and he has a few theories why that’s the case.

“The major cause is the loss of wildlife habitat,” said Poirier, 73, of Cornwall, who began fishing on Lake St. Francis near Lancaster over 60 years ago. “There was big-time velocity and it showed up down here. . . ships were having navigational issues, wharfs were flooded, perch fishermen were doubling up on anchors to stay in one spot, and a lot of the (perch) spawning beds were destroyed – the eggs went further downstream (toward Montreal).”
