If we're rescinding Southern Baptist history, let's undo our link to the Confederacy

(RNS) On June 9, two Southern Baptist pastors, Tom Ascol of Florida and Tom Buck of Texas, called on the delegates to next week’s denominational meeting in Nashville to rescind Resolution 9, which lays out the SBC’s position on critical race theory (CRT), the academic framework behind many contemporary ideas about systemic racism. Since Resolution 9 passed at the 2019 annual meeting, opposition to CRT has become the cause du jour among some Southern Baptists, who claim it is the next great threat to Christianity and America. Resolution 9 said simply that while there might be some things we can learn from CRT as it analyzes how race has been constructed and worked in American history and culture, as Christians, we should always recognize that the Bible’s teachings are supreme.

My Turn: A syllabus for the sponsors of 'divisive concepts' legislation

My Turn: A syllabus for the sponsors of ‘divisive concepts’ legislation Published: 2/24/2021 10:41:57 AM An open letter to Reps. Jason Osborne, Keith Ammon, and Glenn Cordelli, sponsors of House Bill 544, a bill that addresses the propagation of so-called “divisive concepts”: Having read HB 544, a bill relative to the “propagation of divisive concepts,” and having compared it to a September 2020 presidential executive order, I was struck by the repetition of ideas in both documents that are simply inaccurate and, sadly, fly in the face of contemporary history. Solid research has demonstrated that, though we have made appreciable progress toward a racially just society, much structural, institutional racism remains and it will not simply disappear of its own accord. It is simply too integral and too invisibly ingrained in our society for reasonable people to expect that to happen.

Southern Strategy | The Inglorius Padre Steve's World

I am posting a section of my book Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory! Racism, Religion, Ideology and Politics in the Civil War Era and their Continuing Importance regarding the actions of Southern Democrat Secessionists who had already split their party during the 1860 election because I think it is very relevant today. Former and twice impeached President Donald Trump and his supporters attempted a coup by attacking Congress as it undertook its Constitutional duty to officially count the votes of the Electoral College.  The assault made under the direct order of the former President was brutal and led by White Nationalists, Neo-Nazis, armed self-proclaimed militias, and a host of Theocratic Christians whose Crosses and Flags were prominent in the attack. The Terrorists who attacked the Capitol almost captured former Vice President Mike Pence who they threatened to hang, even bringing a gallows to the Capitol lawn, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and many others. The Whole Story in a Single Photo

The Whole Story in a Single Photo Clint Smith Updated at 5:57 p.m. ET on January 8, 2021. On Wednesday afternoon, as insurrectionists assaulted the Capitol, a man wearing a brown vest over a black sweatshirt walked through the halls of Congress with the Confederate battle flag hanging over his shoulder. One widely circulated photo, taken by Mike Theiler of Reuters, captured him mid-stride, part of the flag almost glowing with the light coming from the hallway to his left. Just above and behind him is a painting of Charles Sumner, the ardent abolitionist senator from Massachusetts. On May 22, 1856, Sumner was attacked by Preston Brooks a pro-slavery member of the House of Representatives from South Carolina for a speech Sumner had made criticizing slaveholders, including Brooks’s cousin Andrew Butler, a senator representing South Carolina. Brooks attacked Sumner on the Senate floor. “Mr. Sumner, I have read your speech twice over carefully. It is a libel on S
