In the fourth edition of the
Bay Area Reporter s monthly online chats celebrating the 50th anniversary of the publication, veteran writers John F. Karr and Cornelius Washington will discuss the history of sexuality in the publication.

From porn reviews to escort ads and strip club features, the
Bay Area Reporter has never been shy about sharing information on sexuality. Among the topics of discussion are the hedonistic days of the 1970s, safe sex through the AIDS pandemic, and the rise and fall of the notorious escort ads in the newspaper. Arts & Nightlife Editor Jim Provenzano moderates.
As the 1990s approached, films began to offer more positive portrayals of LGBTQ people, often as the loyal best friend/confidante, with characters beginning to be more fleshed out, having lives rooted in their sexuality but not necessarily ruled only by it (i.e.
Fried Green Tomatoes, 1991). Straight society could identify with the queer search for happiness despite facing oppression and traditional values (i.e. The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, 1994).
