Jerry Summers: Big Ruby Of Alabama Saturday, January 2, 2021 - by Jerry Summers

When you are the sister of ex-Governor James Elisha “Big Jim” Folsom and the mother of Cornelia Wallace, second wife of George C. Wallace, three-time governor of Alabama and unsuccessful candidate for President of the United States, you have to be a big part of the history of the State of Alabama.
Ruby Lee Folsom Ellis Austin was a bigger than life character in the colorful and often corrupt state government in Montgomery. “Big Ruby” (she was over six feet tall) was born on May 27, 1913 in Elba, Alabama and died on April Fool’s Day in 2000 at Enterprise, Alabama. She was five years younger than Big Jim whose populist campaign led him to the governship in Alabama in 1947-1951 and 1955-1959.
