Del Norte DAR wraps up wreaths kick-off

Del Norte Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution sends thanks and appreciation to every person who supported the Independence Day weekend kick-off sponsorship venture for Wreaths Across America. Those who sponsored wreaths, those who stopped by to inquire about the project, those who checked out the display and everyone who spoke, smiled and said words of appreciation, Del Norte DAR extends heartfelt thanks to each one. Thanks also to Safeway Management, and the local media, printed and on-the-air, for publicity support. Wreaths Across America is a nationwide endeavor to see that every veteran is honored and remembered for their service to our country and to teach and inform the public of all ages, what it means to serve in our military and defend our nation.  The wreaths are made from fresh balsa fir in Maine; shipped cross-country by volunteer truckers, with stops at veterans cemeteries from coast to coast; then ceremoniously placed on veterans gravesites in mid-Dec

Ames recognized for WWII military service

Bob Ames Jr., a well known Crescent City resident, was recently recognized and honored for his military service during WWII by the Del Norte Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution. April 17 found the Chapter members visiting the Ames’ country residence, with congratulations and thanks to Ames for his Naval service in WWII and the Korean Conflict. Ames graduated Del Norte High School and enlisted in the Navy in the fall of 1943. He was 17 years old and served until his honorable discharge in May 1946. Del Norte Chapter Regent Cori Higgins, and Program Chairman Marlene Young presented Bob a plaque, with a certificate of appreciation from Del Norte Chapter DAR, inset with a photo of the 17-year-old sailor, and other awards and memorabilia he had earned during his time in the Navy.  His wife, Mary Jean, was presented a beautiful spring bouquet.
