Nonprofit Wash Away Unemployment is teaming with released inmates

After serving nearly a decade in prison for robbery at age 16, New Bern native Corey Purdie swore he would never go back following his release on Independence Day 2003. Through the help of a local minister Jeff Smith, he got a second chance by washing cars to help the church.  After making 40 cents a day doing prison work, he borrowed a bucket, a hose and some Joy dish detergent from his mother’s sink and started his own business. He developed car washing for $5 in 2007 into a successful enterprise with Miracle Wash, which franchised from James City to Roseville and Charlotte.
