Cashino Gaming Ltd, trading as Mekur Slots, had been refused planning permission to convert a former Coral Betting Shop on Abingdon Street into an adult gaming centre amid fears it would tempt vulnerable residents into gambling.
Councillor Fred Jackson told a previous meeting of the planning committee the council wanted to reduce the number of gambling outlets in the town because “of the temptation places like this puts in front of people.”
But an independent planning inspector has over-ruled the town hall decision on appeal.
Robert Walker said in his written decision: “There is no substantive evidence before me of any specific gambling problem in the locality that would be exacerbated by the proposal, particularly having regard to the previous and extant use as a betting shop.”
