You are so gorgeous, little Copen, it’s making me mad. It’s difficult for me to accept that this global pandemic is keeping us apart. We were meant to meet face to face during the 2021 Tokyo Auto Salon, but sadly the event has been cancelled and our meet cute will have to wait until some glorious future. For now, I have to remain admiring from afar, but one day this Copen will be able to take me home to meet its parents. We’ll be together forever. Someday.
Daihatsu reveals a collection of cute concepts for next month s show.
The Tokyo Auto Salon has had to adapt to the effects of the pandemic and will be closing its doors in person but opening its digital doors to the internet, with a virtual event scheduled for early next year. Since there won t be the same sort of reveal that would normally take place, a number of manufacturers have been teasing some of the new machines they ll be unveiling at the 2021 show. We ll be seeing work from TRD and Modellista after they ve had their way with the Toyota GR Supra and some other models, but manufacturers like Daihatsu are bringing some cool projects too.

The Tokyo Auto Salon has been canceled for 2021 because of you guessed it, COVID-19 but that hasn t stopped Japan s carmakers from building some wild concepts for the event. First to reveal their lineup is Daihatsu, who brings a five-pack of whimsical kei cars to the party.
For driving enthusiasts, perhaps the most compelling is the Copen Spyder Ver. The most notable thing about the standard Daihatsu Copen is the fact it utilizes a spaceframe structure that lets you easily swap out body panels to create different looks and colors for your compact roadster. This look mixes the retro look of the Copen Cero with a speedster-style half-windshield, headrest fairings, and Volk Racing TE37 wheels.

The Tokyo Auto Salon is only happening virtually in 2021, but that s not stopping automakers like Daihatsu from showing off their customized vehicles originally for the aftermarket-focused event. This year, the Japanese automaker keeps things whimsical by calling its display the Daihatsu Village Colorful Carnival with a theme of new ways to have fun.
Starting with by far the weirdest but certainly fun, there s the Daihatsu Hijet Jumbo Sportza Ver. It s based on the company s Hijet commercial vehicle with the Jumbo extended cab, but the automaker takes a buzzsaw to the upper half of the body to create a roadster. There s now a sporty front fascia and a tiny windshield. Occupants sit in a pair of sports seats with tiny nacelles above them. The back has a huge cargo bed, and a three-outlet, side-exit exhaust
