However, two seniors from New Underwood are joining a college rodeo team.

Cooper Filipek signed a letter of intent on Thursday morning to compete in rodeo at Mesalands Community College in Tucumcari, New Mexico.
Filipek qualified for the national high school finals rodeo for the past two years.
In fact, he’s the defending state champion in the bareback riding after winning all three rounds at state last June.
“When I first started to sign for a college, I didn’t even think of anything down south,” said Cooper Filipek. “But this past summer, I met this coach at nationals at Guthrie, Oklahoma. He got a hold of me about two months after nationals around October. I went and visited him for the very first time during Halloween. Just like the place. Fell in love with it. RAPID CITY, S.D. – Sunday was the annual Sutton Rodeo 20X High School Showcase Rodeo.
Chase Yellowhawk kicked off the rodeo with a solid 73-point bareback ride to nip defending champion and Rapid City Central senior Cooper Filipek (72) for the gold buckle.
Wall high school senior Camri Elshere overcame some pre-run jitters to win breakaway roping with an excellent 2.59-second run.
New Underwood senior Tessa Caspers followed a similar script, overcoming the memory of a dismal performance at last year’s 20X with a winning pole bending effort on Sunday.
