LA GRANDE â La Grandeâs Cook Memorial Library has long offered basic library services to locals living outside La Grande. Starting May 1, nonresidents can purchase memberships that give them access to all of Cook Memorialâs services.
Library Director Kip Roberson explained Cook Memorial Library is making the move to distinguish between who lives inside the city limits of La Grande and who does not.
Residents of La Grande on a per capita basis spend approximately $50 annually in taxes to support library services, Roberson said, so they receive the full slate of what the library has to offer.
That covers basic library services â borrowing books, magazines and DVDs, attending programs and events, using the public access computers and borrowing e-books and e-audiobooks through Library2Go â as well as enhanced services. Those include access to platforms to stream movies and TV shows, expanded access to e-books and e-audiobooks, online career assistance and borr
TAMWORTH â The Cook Memorial Library at 93 Main St. in Tamworth received a program grant from New Hampshire Humanities to host a book group discussion of Bloodlines and Other Stories, by Octavia E. Butler, on Tuesday, May 4, at 7 p.m. online via Zoom. The online discussion will be facilitated by Joshua Tepley, associate professor of philosophy at Saint Anselm College.
New Hampshire Humanities recently started the âPerspectivesâ program to offer facilitated book discussion groups in an online format. New Hampshire Humanities provides expert facilitators for book groups and copies of books in multiple formats to book group participants.
Through the program they aim to help participants to engage with diverse perspectives in the humanities to build understanding and empathy, and to support a culture of reading in the Granite State in partnership with libraries.
The La Grande Arts Commission on Saturday, April 11, announced the call for proposals.
The selection commission, according to the request, is especially interested in submissions that âconsider the values of the communities that make up La Grande, are multicultural, interactive and engaging. ⦠Weâre looking for an innovative and creative design that speaks to the cultural identity of La Grande and honors its heritage through a cohesive use of materials and visual language. The artwork should reflect the theme, âHonoring the Past, Celebrating the Present; Embracing the Future.ââ
Stu Spence, director of La Grande Parks & Recreation, explained the arts commission for several years has held what it calls âcreative conversationsâ with members of the art community in Northeast Oregon, except for in 2020, due to the pandemic.

Q&A
Q: Why are you running for the library board, whether for re-election or election the first time? Is there a particular issue that motivates you, and if so, what is it?
A: I have watched and participated in the library s growth and prosperity over the past 14 years; the library is at the heart of the Libertyville community that my husband and I have loved since we moved to the area. I want to help ensure that the library continues its current trajectory as a house of knowledge, a learning resource, and a place for community engagement. When I describe our library to family and friends in other communities, they are amazed at all that our library district has to offer; I want to be part of the team that maintains and continues to add to - this vibrant community resource. It is a way for me to give back to our community through the resource I take full advantage of.
